What to Do With Your Rep Kit

Rep kits are a great way to repair your gear until you can get to the trailhead to have it fixed professionally. The key is knowing what you can do with it if you need it.

In the long run, home repaired dentures can result in faster bone loss, continuing irritation and sores as well as tumors and sores.

Tools

Having the right tools available is critical when on the job. This kit was developed with that in mind and contains all the basic hand tools necessary to repair items in the field. The tools are made of steel and are minimal plastic so they can be used for a long time. The kit includes an elasticized canvas coalcracker tool pouch and includes awl, reamer, twist awl cutting shears and Gimlet (5MM) wooden spool of sinue, a bottle of coalcracker tool oil and illustrated instructions.

Repair Patches

If you've got holes or two in your gear, you might want to consider adding some adhesive patches to your rep kit. These patches are made of high-performance glue already applied on a durable polyurethane back that lets a tear that is triggered by pressure to heal. Available in clear or colored versions These patches offer durability against punctures, rep kit moisture saltwater, sunlight and temperatures that are extreme.

If your kit doesn't include any of the above items, you might want to consider adding a bag with waterproof Aquaseal wader repair sealant. This water-tight glue will adhere to fabrics and metals to provide a permanent fix. This is ideal for repairs to drysuits and also utilized in the field. It can take up to 12 hours to cure before you can use your repaired equipment.

The essential field fabric kit for backpacks, tents and rainwear made of silicone impregnated nylon. Includes one Clean Tape repair patch and a sil-nylon swatch. Also included is a 1/4 ounce Gore-Tex Repair Adhesive, Sealant and Sealant tube and brush. Apply patch over a smooth, clean surface of the damaged area, with at least 1/2 inch overlap. Remove release paper from patch surface and rub the adhesive with moderate finger pressure (adhesive side up).

Surface preparation is vital for successful repairs. Sunblock, acetone, or oil on boots and shoes can affect adhesion. To get the best results, apply Seam Grip alone or with Cotol-240 Cure Accelerator to speed curing up to 2 hours.

Adhesive patches

If you're on the trail but do not have the time to make an entire vulcanising repair, these adhesive patches will get you back in the saddle in no time. Simply roughen the tube using the included scraper, apply one of the self-adhesive patches, and apply the patch.

Thoroughly clean the punctured area, then use the tube-scuffer or sandpaper to roughen the surface which makes it easier for glue to stick. Then spread a thin layer of glue over the patch to cover an area that is at least as big as the patch itself. Let the glue get tacky and then press the patch down with a firm pressure and secure it.
