It also has an option called smart mapping that uses multiple sensors to determine the areas in your home that require attention and then create a clean path around them. We've seen this technology in action and it does a great job of moving around toys placed on the floor or furniture legs that stick out from under the furniture. It also has a camera sensor that will snap the Roomba back to its original position when it starts to drift from its actual location.

iRobot has also introduced a new set of rollers underneath the Roomba's bottom that don't have bristles and, therefore, tend to resist tangles better than earlier models. They're also a bit taller than previous rollers, and Auto vacuum Cleaner will fit better under beds and couches that are low and are designed to help this model navigate more easily on varying floor types.

The Roomba 980 is distinguished from other models with a high-end price tag by its new dirt detection feature that makes use of a camera in order to detect dirt embedded. This is a nice improvement over the previous version, which relied on a sensor-driven pseudorandom coverage technique to bounce around a room and clean it at least three times from different angles.

In our tests of its performance in our tests of its performance, the Roomba 980 did well on carpets and hard flooring. It scored extremely well on carpets with low pile and on mid-pile. It did a decent job of removing pet hair, but it struggled with extremely thick and long pet fur that was stuck together.

Despite these slight limitations, the Roomba 980 remains one of our most efficient robots, and isn't even nearly as expensive as some of the other top-of-the-line models on this list. It's got plenty of features we'd expect to find in a flagship model, but it doesn't have all the fancy app-enabled functions or smart home integration that are found in other top contenders.

The iRobot Roomba can be set up in a matter of minutes and is ready to use immediately. After taking the yellow bin insert and pull tab from the undercarriage, you simply plug it into an outlet on the wall or to its Home Base docking stations, hit the "Clean button" and let it do its job. It will automatically return to its dock when the battery runs out or it's stuffed with debris. It also has indicator lights on the top to indicate when its bin is full, it needs to be recharged or if its Wi-Fi signal has gone out.
